How it works
Enter your trip distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. The calculator works in two modes depending on which unit system you pick.
Imperial: fuel (gal) = distance (mi) / MPG
Imperial: cost = fuel × price per gallon
Metric: fuel (L) = distance (km) × L/100km / 100
Metric: cost = fuel × price per litre
MPG vs L/100km
MPG (Miles Per Gallon) is a "higher is better" measure: it tells you how far you travel on one gallon. The US and UK both use MPG but with different gallon sizes (US gallon = 3.785 L, UK gallon = 4.546 L), so a UK MPG figure is always higher than the equivalent US MPG for the same car.
L/100km (Litres per 100 kilometres) is a "lower is better" measure used in most of Europe, Australia, and Canada. It asks "how much fuel do I burn to travel 100 km?" The two are inversely related.
L/100km (Litres per 100 kilometres) is a "lower is better" measure used in most of Europe, Australia, and Canada. It asks "how much fuel do I burn to travel 100 km?" The two are inversely related.
L/100km = 235.21 / MPG (US)
MPG (US) = 235.21 / L/100km
Typical efficiency values
- Compact cars: 30-40 MPG / 6-8 L/100km
- Sedans: 25-35 MPG / 7-9 L/100km
- SUVs: 18-28 MPG / 8-13 L/100km
- Trucks: 15-25 MPG / 9-16 L/100km
- Hybrids: 40-55+ MPG / 4-6 L/100km
- EVs: equivalent 80-130 MPGe
